Even so, it’s a remarkable feat of world-building, evocatively illustrating just how hard and hopeless life is for augmented people in this grim vision of the future. When I first arrived I thought I’d be spending a lot more time there, that it would be much bigger, but it’s really just an elaborate introduction to one of the main story missions. It’s one of my favourite locations in the Deus Ex series so far, inspired by Hong Kong’s infamous Kowloon Walled City, but it’s not a proper hub. Jensen briefly visits Golem City, a ghetto built on the outskirts of the Czech capital to house augmented people. Perhaps they just didn’t have the time or resources to create another location as detailed as Prague, which is understandable. It takes the sting out of there only being one city, but I would still have liked to see more of this world. A new district opens up, and extra missions become available. ![]() ![]() This gives it a very different look and feel. In the first act you explore it during daylight hours, but later you get to see it at night. Jensen will embark on a mission, returning home to find a different spin on the city. To make up for the single hub, Prague is remixed several times over the course of the game. Seconds later the entire police force was hunting me down and trying to kill me. I had a strange moment where I tasered a guy robbing a store at gunpoint, thinking I was doing a good deed, and a cop saw me. Although they will react to any crimes you commit. A scene will play where they demand to see your papers, but that’s it. For example, entering a metro station through the naturals-only entrance, or getting on the wrong train carriage. Thankfully, the various gameplay styles and the inclusion of the unique, arcade-ish Breach VR missions will give players plenty of reasons to keep coming back to the future. The police presence in Prague is never a real obstacle, but there are certain situations where they’ll bother you. If there's one minor drawback to this, it's that depending on exactly how you've customized your personal Adam Jensen, you almost feel a little overpowered by the time you hit the endgame. Whichever path you choose, though, there's no shortage of upgrades and abilities. Instead of charging into a guarded warehouse and letting the lead fly, why not hack a nearby terminal, open a high window, and dash over those guards' heads, leaving them none the wiser to your presence? In fact, the game even encourages it by offering up more XP for keeping your guns holstered. While you can always go in guns blazing, it's actually a lot more interesting to figure out alternative ways to bypass violence. You're given a ridiculous amount of freedom in how you can accomplish objectives and overcome obstacles. The personal options go well beyond the game's plot. The downside to this is Adam Jensen doesn't get much character development, feeling much more generic than he did in Human Revolution. ![]() While the plot has a fairly distinct beginning and end, it's the way you perceive and react to the world around you that makes the story more personal. You're thrust into a world where one group of people is separated from the rest for reasons that could be seen as justified and simultaneously inexcusable. But Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is less about Jensen's story than the player's. This is the world Adam Jensen - and the player - lives in. The world of Deus Ex is a cyberpunk dystopia, a place where advancements in human augmentation that were meant to help people achieve their full potential have instead led to distrust and isolation. This massive adventure is an incredibly deep, surprisingly flexible adventure where the player's choices dictate the story, the action, and, eventually, how the world changes.
